Sustainable Development Criteria

University of Tennessee graduate students from the Department of Urban & Regional Planning facilitated a series of workshops during 2001-2002. Citizens and public officials participated in the development of ten criteria for sustainable development in Cocke County to use as a basis and guide.. The ten criteria are as follows:

* Improve human capital
* Have a rich portfolio of activities
* Provide for diverse levels of employment
* Maximize Jobs for local people
* Maximize re-development of existing resources
* Maximize use of indigenous resources and skills
* Maximize feasibility
* Minimize development of undeveloped land
* Minimize pollution
* Minimize need for new infrastructure
